All My Youth Biographies… so far

Over 16 years ago I wrote my first youth biography on the life of Richard Wurmbrand, and I had the great privilege of being able to send a copy of my book to the man himself and I have a photograph of him reading it. I’ll have to scan this crumpled piece of paper and post it up here one of these days.

Apart from the books I’ve written on Billy Graham and Joni Eareckson Tada I’ve not been able to say that my characters have had any say in the material I’ve written about them. However, I’ve used a variety of source material to get to the nitty gritty of their lives… some of that material coming direct from these individuals such as was the case with John Knox.

By far most of the material i write is fact, but it doesn’t feel like that when you read it. That’s because I introduce a lot of the fact through the medium of dialogue… imagined conversation between the non fictional characters. The Trailblazer series, for which many people write, is not dull history. It’s not fantasy fiction either. It takes the history and fact of one genre and the pace and adventurous style of the other and combines them.

I don’t add people to the story who weren’t there in the first place, and that is the case for pretty much all the Trailblazer books. I encourage the other authors in this series to adopt this practice too. But with the use of language and pace, style and description the authors for these books make sure that these books have the excitement that these christian lives epitomize.

As a young girl I didn’t put posters of pop stars up in my room, thankfully in my heart I was inspired by other heroes … Gladys Aylward, Mary Slessor, Corrie ten Boom, Hudson Taylor… some of these real lives I have been given the privilege of writing about. Hopefully inspiring the next generation to emulate the lives of believers and ultimately of the greatest hero – Jesus Christ.
