Cyprus talk 2013

Children need to be taught everything except how to sin.
Proverbs 20:11-12 tells us that even small children are known by their actions.
Genesis 8:21 says that every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.
Yet proverbs 22:6 gives a message of hope.
Start a child in the way they should go and even when they are old they will not depart from it.
The message of hope for the human race – that Christ died for the ungodly – is a message for children as well as adults.

Jesus Christ himself said ‘let the little children come to me and do not hinder them.’
We know it’s important to teach children about health and safety. We should be so much more concerned about spiritual health and safety.
It is more than teaching bible stories and good behaviour.
It is teaching Christ crucified for sinners and that all have sinned.
Even the baby one minute old has had a life of sin from conception as we read in Psalm 51:5.

The message of sin and salvation is not too difficult for children. They are not too young to be told.
Joel 2 says ‘bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast.’
Psalm 78:1 says ‘I will utter dark sayings of old. We are not to hide them from the children that they might set their hope in God.’

Can a child understand? Well, can an adult? Understanding and faith are gifts from God. As believers our responsibility is to believe and follow Christ and then to teach, tell, command so that the next generation will hear, learn and in GOD’S time fear his name, follow his way, believe in Christ and be saved.

To teach children doctrine is to teach them their status before God, I need of salvation and what it is that they need to do as sinners.

What do they need to do?
Repent and believe the gospel…. Romans 5:6; John 3:16.

When we teach this doctrine to children we will find it is more than infants who will learn. By God’s grace we who teach will be taught.
Deuteronomy 29:29 says, ‘the things God has revealed belong to us and our children for ever – that we may follow all the words of this law.’

When we talk about God’s word, read it, explain it, discuss it with children – God is using us to bring glory to his name for it is ‘through the praise of children and infants that The Lord has established a stronghold against his enemies.
